Vive la France!

"The year began with lunch..." The first line from one of my favourite books, A Year in Provence by Peter Mayle.

It was the holiday I'd dreamed about, had waited for so long for and while I'd love to be able to say our holiday started in a beach bar with a glass of rosé looking out to sea like it usually does, it didn't.

This was my first time to travel to France on my own with the boys so after David met us as the airport late on Monday night and after we all drove in the hired car for over an hour crossing fingers that it would still be open "The holiday began with Mc Donalds..."

Yet what followed was the holiday of my dreams. For once in my life I didn't have any expectations (I'm a planner who likes to picture how everything should be), but this time something told me to try to let everything just fall into place. Maybe it was experience - I've had enough Mammy fails to recognise that days are better when you don't picture how they should be. Maybe I'd finally learned that with kids you can plan but you can't REALLY plan. So I did what I'd never done before going on a family holiday... I didn't plan the days and I didn't expect too much.

Myself and David come here as often as we can but this was our first French holiday with the boys since our littlest was three months old and I've missed sharing this wonderful place with them. This time I certainly lived by Socrates quote "What screws us up most in life is the picture in our head of what it's supposed to be."

I feel my words will never do this place justice so here's a few snapshots of our week so far and our holiday with no expectations...

  2. Good attempt. The text could have been longer to suit the cascade of pictures that follows it but this is a very minor lapse. A really nice effort on the part of the writer.
