Martini | Weekend cocktail

**This year instead of cutting back on things with my New Year's resolutions some of them involved taking up something new. One of those was cocktails! I decided I was going to make one or two on a Friday or Saturday, not every week but when we were at home with no weekend plans and wanted to swap our usual wine or craft beer for something a little different. Here's cocktail #4...

It's time for another cocktail recipe using my favourite spirit - Bombay Sapphire. With a few busy weekends one after the other we haven't had our weekend cocktail for almost a month, so I decided a Martini was in order! With four parts gin to one part vermouth you do need to limit yourself to just one though. Bond may have been able to down quite a few of these at a time and still aim a gun but in reality this is one strong drink!

Although a Martini is a simple cocktail of gin and vermouth usually garnished with an olive or lemon twist, there are a few subtle differences. Here's how to order your martini like a pro...

Dry Martini

A dry Martini contains very little vermouth. A very dry Martini has just a film of vermouth on the rim of the glass, almost a pure gin cocktail.

Wet Martini

A wet Martini contains more vermouth to the standard four to one ratio.

Dirty Martini

A dirty Martini is a popular version of an olive garnished Martini, using olive brine or olive juice for an extra olive kick.

Gibson

The Gibson is garnished with a pickled onion instead of the usual olive or lemon twist.

Vesper

We all know Bond preferred his cocktail 'Shaken, not stirred'. Not one to conform to the norm, Bond also preferred his martinis made with vodka not gin. A Vesper is a mix of both and featured in the book Casino Royal where he gives exact specifications on how to make the drink. “Three measures of Gordon’s, one of vodka, half a measure of Kina Lillet. Shake it very well until it’s ice-cold, then add a large thin slice of lemon-peel. Got it?”

And because I love olives here's the Martini I decided on..!

Dirty Martini

What you'll need:

  • 4 oz Bombay Sapphire gin
  • 1 oz Martini, extra dry
  • ½ tsp olive brine from the jar
  • ice
  • three skewered olives on a cocktail stick

How to make it:

First of all, it's essential that this drink is served cold. Although Bond prefers his drink shaken not stirred, Martini connoisseurs will tell you that this drink is made weaker and becomes cloudy after being jostled around with ice in a cocktail shaker.

To make the perfect Martini, first chill both your mixing container and your serving glass. You can store them for a short time in the freezer or a longer time in the fridge.

Add a handful of ice to the cocktail shaker. Pour in the gin, vermouth and olive brine. Stir for approximately 60 seconds until the shaker becomes frosty and the drink reaches the perfect ice-cold temperature.

Strain the stirred cocktail into your chilled glass.

Pop three olives on a cocktail stick and garnish the glass.

Take your super sophisticated, elegant drink to the couch, pop on your cosiest slippers, grab the remote, and enjoy.

Have a lovely, chilled out (with all the hail!) long weekend.
